Fèt mwen/My birthday

8 04 2011

Tout sak pat konnen, fon ti proche

Tout sak te lwen, vin fon koute

Ban m’ yon ti plas nan zorèy nou

Pou pale nou de yon gran jou

Se te yon 6 mas katrevenwit

Bri a te kouri nouvèl la gaye

Yon fanm ansent ki tap pouse yon pitit

Aprè anpil soufrans li rive fè yon bebe

Yon pitit gason ki byen kanpe

Lè yo pale avèl – li tande

Kiyès li ye, nou poko konnen

Ebyen li pa lòt ke Rolin!

Avan m’ rive pi lwen

Map di Granmèt la mèsi

Pou tout sa li te fè pou mwen

Pandan tout peri pesi

Manman m’ ki pa janm lage m’

Jodi a byen ba m koube m

Devan l pou m remèsyel

An menm tan map karese l’

Menm si pa gen lajan pou m achte

Anpil gwo bwason ki egziste

Depi se pa sou kabann lopital mwen kouche

Mwen pa nan prizon, map fete

Map pran plezi m pou m fete

Ak tout zanmi m’ ki rete

Mèsi anpil ou menm ki pòte

Lanmou pou mwen san rele

‘88 a 2011 se pa yon jwèt

Menm si w pa ka ban m chanpay ak pen bagèt

Men pou w ka fè m santi m nan fèt

Nan de ti mo w mèt di m: Bon Fèt!

Anyone who doesn’t already know, draw near
All those who were far away, come and listen
Lend me your ears for a moment
So I can tell you about a momentous day.

It was March 6, 1988
The noise mounted, the news spread:
A pregnant woman was giving birth
And after lots of suffering, she at last had a baby.

A well-formed little boy
When they spoke to him, he understood!
Who was he?  Don’t you know yet?
Well, it was no one other than Rolin!

Before I go any further,
I must give the good Lord thanks
For all he’s done for me
Amidst all these troubled years.

My mother, who has never left me
Today, I must bow before her
To thank her
As I hug her

Even if I don’t have money to buy
A lot of good drinks to enjoy,
As long as I’m not lying in a hospital bed
I’m not in prison, I’m going to celebrate!

I’m going to have fun, I’m going to party
With all my friends who remain.
Thank you so much for bringing me
Love unconditionally
‘88 a 2011 is a pretty big deal
Even if you can’t give me champagne and French bread
But you can still make me feel that this is my special day
With two little words: Happy Birthday!

— Rolin ALEXIS
