Ayiti di wi, Ayiti nan chimen libète/Haiti says yes, Haiti on the path to liberty

Ayiti peyi ki te pi bèl nan tout Anti

Sou tou la koloni

Jodi a li depafini afòs li pase mati anba

Men gro peyi depi lontan kap fè l soufri

Sèt fwa si l’ reyaji lap di

Apre l fin soufri fòk li rejwi

Lè l te gen bèl figi, yo tout tap goumen pou li

Yo tout te vle poze men sou li

Paske l’ te gen anpil bèl prodwi

Kounye a fòk nou leve eskanp figi l

Si n voye jèn, la Sendomeng ayisyen yap maltrete

Poutan se yon peyi n fè 25 an ak okipe

Jiskilè na di nou lib tout bon vre

Pou tout jèn ki tèmine jwenn inivèsite

Pou nan lari Pòtoprens pa gen plis moun kap mande

Pou nan tout vil pwovens gen elektrisite

Pou ti pèp la sispann rele “viv” oubyen “aba”

Koudeta sou koudeta peyi m toujou nan fènwa

Chak fwa nou kraze brize peyi n toujou fè bak

Lavichè lamizè tounen yon nouvèl atak.

Lè tout bagay sa yo va fini

Lè sa peyi nou va fleri

Lanati va souri

Tout moun va gen respè pou li.

Haiti, once the most beautiful country of the Antilles

Of all the colonies

Today, it is falling apart, martyred

In the hands of the big countries who have for so long made it suffer

This time, if she reacts, she will say

That after her suffering ends, she will rejoice.

When Haiti had a lovely face, they fought over her

They all wanted to lay their hands on her

Because of all of her beautiful raw products.

Now, we must make Haiti hold her head up

If our young people go to Santo Domingo, they will be mistreated

Even though it we occupied them for 25 years

Not until then can we at last say we are truly free

For all the youth who have finished high school to be able to go to university

For there not to be any more people begging on the streets of Port-au-Prince

For all the towns in the countryside to have electricity

For the people to stop yelling “Long Live!” or “Down With!”

Coup d’etat after coup d’etat, my country is still in darkness

Every time we commit vandalism, our country loses ground

Inflation and poverty are just the next attack.

When all those things at last are done,

That will be the time when our country blooms

And nature will smile

And everyone will respect Haiti once again.

Dousè Lakay/The Sweetness of Home

7 04 2011

Lè m’ panse ak Jeremi

Senbòl paradi

Kote lavi ap fleri

Tout kalite bon fwi

Bon jèn jan, nèg frè

Kap bwè dlo kokoye

Ak bèl chanpèt laye

K’ap pran ti rafrechi kreyòl

Nan manje kenèp, melon, kowosòl

Ak yon lanmou tonmtonm kalalou

Kalalou krab mele ak pwason koulourou

Dè fwa mwen santi kè map senyen

Lè m sonje zaboka ak lam boukannen

Boul manyòk nan sòs pwa kongo

Manje mango jòn pou pye ak kouto

Mwen santi m alèz

Nan mitan yon rak bwa

Lè m akoupi pou m’ fè yon ti tata

Sou tèt wòch bò falèz

Jeremi ap fè m je dous

Ak bèl zoranj, bèl panplemous

Grenadya apt aye banda

Grenadin men nap kaladya

Devan Abriko k’ap bay cho konparèt

Yon grenn sitron parèt li pouse Dejèm

Pou donnen bèl tigason menm jan avè m

Woy! Kojepens fè m’ tounen yon powèt!

Pou m’ chante lanmou lakay

Dous tankou ji papay

Tonbe sou koulè lavi m

Tache tout lespri m’

Jeremi, je tèm, je tèm.

When I think of Jérémie
Symbol of paradise
Where life flourishes
All kinds of good fruit.

Good people, all men are brothers
Drinking coconut water
As the countryside fans out around them

As we sit in the cool Creole breeze
We eat kènep, melon, and soursop
With love for tonmtonm and kalalou
Okra sauce and crab mixed with the fish called koulourou

Sometimes I feel like I’m bleeding
When I remember avocado with roasted breadfruit
Yucca balls in Congo pea sauce
Eating a yellow mango, fresh off the tree, with a knife

I feel comfortable
In the middle of a forest of trees
When I squat to take a little poop
Atop a steep rock

Jérémie, so sweet to my eyes
With beautiful oranges, beautiful grapefruit
Passionfruit is all dressed up
Even grenadine dances kaladya.

Beyond the town of Abricots, where they make hot gingerbread,
A single lemon sprouted two buds, Dejèm*
To produce a nice young man like me.
Woy! KOJEPENS has made me into a poet!

So that I can sing of my love for my home
As sweet as papaya juice
Falling on the colors of my life
Sticking to my soul
Jérémie, I love you, I love you.

Lam Veritab/ Breadfruit

10 02 2011

Mwen menm lam veritab

Kote m’ ye gason pa bezwen bay kòb

Poutan yo pa renmen mete m’ sou tab

Epi avèk anpil moun mwen pa gen bèl ròb.

Pi gwo enmi m’ se gòl

Ki fè m’ tonbe sou sòl

Pou yo ka manje m’ pa bòl

Paske nan la sante mwen jwe gwo wòl

Depi nan tan koloni

Yo te rele m’ Arbre Véritable

Poutèt m’ itil anpil fanmi

M’ jwenn yon amou adorable.

Nan fritay mwen pa janm ret nan bak

Nan ji mwen pi bon toujou

Eh! Nan tonmtonm se pa pale

Si w poko goute m’ chache goute m’!
